A Beginner’s Guide To Patching Drywall

Knowing how to patch drywall takes time, especially if you want a flawless and even surface. It is an art that requires both patience and persistence. It might take a lot of practice to conceal the seams and joints as if nothing happened. Once you have decided to work on your drywall, prepare all the tools and materials needed immediately.

Avoid unnecessary disasters by wearing protective footwear, goggles, gloves and long-sleeve shirt while carrying out repairs. If you are sensitive to dust, wear a dust mask since sanding can cause dust particles to accumulate. You might want to use plastic sheets or cloth to protect the furniture from dust.

First thing to do is prepare the damaged area. If you are repairing a large hole, remove any torn paper edges on the surface. This is essential for the joint compound to bond strongly, making it easier to flush with the wall.

Cut a square around the hole with a taping knife. It is best to install drywall joists on both sides to keep the new panel in place. You may have to attach several backing frames if you are performing a large-scale repair. However, make sure there are no electrical wiring behind the wall since this can pose serious dangers to your household.

Using drywall screws, attach the panel to the backing frame ensuring that all the nail heads are below the surface. This will make it easier for you to spread the compound evenly without having the surface look bumpy and unnatural.

Since paper tapes require a lot more skill to install properly, use a fiberglass mesh to cover the seams. Mesh tapes are self-adhesive so using joint compound to make it stick is not an option. Cover the tape pieces with drywall mud but do not apply a generous amount to avoid having a bumpy surface.

Once the first coating is dry, apply a thin coating of drywall mud until it sets. Sand the mud and flush it with the existing drywall for an even surface. Experts usually wipe the mud lines with a wet sponge to conceal the repaired area. If you are satisfied with the surface and the texture has been sanded, prime and paint.

If you think you cannot handle patching the drywall on your own, do not hesitate to ask help from the professionals. They have enough experience in dealing with drywall issues of all kinds. Avoid costly drywall repairs by taking immediate action as soon as it cracks open
