The Cost Implications Of Comprehensive Patient Education

Healthcare has become a contentious issue almost everywhere in the world and many people struggle to maintain contributions towards private healthcare insurance. Medical treatment is expensive and those that suffer from chronic diseases face hefty bills. Public health systems struggle to cope and patients often have to wait long periods for vital procedures and treatments. Yet, one of the most neglected aspects of health care systems remain the issue of patient education.

One of the biggest laments of doctors is the fact that so many patients simply do not follow their instructions. They prescribe medication that must be taken strictly as prescribed and patients simply do not follow the instructions. Other problems include the fact that many people take medication that they buy over the counter while taking prescription medication. This can be extremely harmful.

Then there is the fact that so many patients do not use medication as indicated. They use it at the wrong times, they use too much or too little and they disregard instructions from their doctors. This can be detrimental to the health of the patient. Many patients also use medication without the knowledge of their doctors, even when using prescription medication at the same time.

It is a known fact that many patients lie to their attending doctors. Some exaggerate their symptoms, others fail to mention important and relevant facts and yet others simply do not provide accurate data. This may cause the doctor to prescribe medication unnecessarily or to fail to prescribe medication or treatment. Lying to a physician is one of the worst things any patient can ever do.

Too many people think that their physicians are responsible for their health. This is simply not true. People need to accept the fact that there is much that they can do to stay healthy. They need to stay healthy by eating properly, by exercising regularly and by leading a healthy lifestyle. By keeping smoking, for example, many patients defy their treatment regimes.

When it comes to lifestyles, many people simply do not care about the consequences of their own actions. Obesity, for example, has become one of the biggest causes of disease in the world. In most cases this can be ascribed to lack of discipline, poor diets and a simple unwillingness to take responsibility. The burden on the health care system becomes enormous.

Healthcare organizations know only too well that the education of the general public can save both money and time. In addition, healthy lifestyles inevitably lead to better quality of life. Subsequently, much money and time is spent on the development of such programs. However, it is unfortunate to learn that most people only start carting about their health when they become the victim of a disease.

Patient education remains one of the most important priorities of the health care sector. Many diseases can be prevented by taking very simple precautions. Treatment of diseases is expensive and counter productive. Knowledge is power but even knowledge is useless if it is not heeded.
